Palengke - Pinoy Style

At last, this is our first visit to the market or "palengke" in tagalog after our last visit in PI last january. Still the same, some of my favorite stand or "sukis" were still there the same location where we last went for "palenge". The only thing different is the price. Of course, it's always like that. I'm not saying that it was normal but somehow, prices of commodities in PI, goes as high as it gets, for let's say, every 3 months. Needless to say, I like it here in PI, I got every thing I need in a snap.

My husband and I decided to have "Sinaing na tulingan" for lunch and Pork Adobo for dinner. I ran into the old store that sells vegetables and buy several for our one week meal. And like I always do in MY, I just picked up every thing I need and put them aside in 1 pile and wait for the "tindera" or sales lady, who's very busy getting all my things in one huge plastic bag ready while tapping her calculator, to be finished. I even heard the nearby stand said that "Iyan ang gusto ko sa namimili di na paiba iba ng gusto" which translated in English is "That's what I like about customers, not very selective". I wasn't sure if this is how that word in Tagalog should be in English, but let's just say that I'm used to buying things in Super Kinta Market and even groceries in Jusco the fast way. I already know the price and how cheap they were that's why there's no need for me to pick up the items and have them check one by one. I didn't find this amusing for time is a luxury I can not afford. I just wanted to have them ready as fast as we can, so we can go back before 1PM in our home in Indang since it's still a 30 minutes drive going back. For sure beyond 1PM is almost as close to snack time. My kids would probably be hungry.

I was so surprised. I only have a few things like a small cabbage, 2 pieces of medium size carrot and potatoes, 1 bottle of oil, 1 bottle of ketchup, 1 bottle of soy sauce and fish sauce, 1 cheese, 1 kangkong, 1 raddish .. ok, this has got to stop but I know I didn't bought at least a kilo of all the 20 items I have listed, and yet I'm paying Php250++. Whew, that was close! Good thing I have extra money. My husband was waiting for me at the parking lot and I didn't have my cellphone with me since I haven't bought a SIM card yet.

Oh, I have got to go back and leave the plastic bag of veggie to Arvin before I head straight to the meat section. Before I started buying things I need I reminded myself that I'm in PI already and when you're in PI, do as the Pinoy's do. I have to asked first for the price, check the pork very closely and have to ask the nearby stand for the same item to see if I can ask for a few discounts or better yet "TAWAD". That's how it works in PI. In MY, you can buy 1 pack of every vegetables for RM1 or Php14+/-. Sometimes, when I bought pork in my suki in MY, Uncle, much obliged, will be the one who give me discount without me asking for it. :) But in PI, it's different, you really have to bargain at a reasonable price. Sometimes, there were grumpy "tindero's or tindera's" (sellers in English) but I already know how to deal with them. My Php500 is not enough for our 1 week meal. I have to go back again and ask my husband Arvin to withdraw extra money for I still have to buy hotdogs, bacons, fish of course, the tulingan and a few other things I need for 1 week.

It took us an hour to complete our lists. We were already hungry. I couldn't help but buy a few sticks of "Banana Cue" and 2 cups of "Samalamig na Buco" just to pass the hunger and time going back to Indang. My husband couldn't resist it too. Even if we sometimes cooked Banana Cue in MY, there's nothing, compare to having your favorite Banana Cue in PI.
